What a absolutely wild few days it has been in the transfer market for Liverpool. Chelsea submitted a £48 million bid for Romeo Lavia and things looked bleak at Anfield. However, in a stunning turn of events, the Reds have had a British record fee of £110 million accepted for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.
Caicedo, who has been Chelsea’s No. 1 target for as long as Liverpool have pursued Lavia, will complete medical tests early Friday. This news is all per transfer news ace Fabrizio Romano.
This is a stunning situation for Liverpool who have seemingly been reluctant to splash any excessive cash after bringing in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai earlier in the summer.
However, it appears the money was there the whole time, they were just waiting for the right moment to strike.
Was the Blues bid for Lavia the final signal for the Reds to pounce? Time will tell, but they accomplished this deal with the ruthless efficiency we have come to know in previous transfer windows.
The pivot from the 19-year old Lavia to the 21-year old Caicedo in less than 48 hours shows the Reds never stopped doing their homework on the Ecuadorian.
It is unlikely Caicedo gets settled in time to feature in Sunday’s season opener, but this deal is a major coup for the Reds. It does beg the question why not spend this on Jude Bellingham? The club deemed his fee to high, but felt Caicedo was worth the cost, an interesting development for a different day.
For now, Liverpool have secured one of the brightest midfield talents playing in the Premier League. In doing so, they have secured the No. 6 defensive midfield role that was gaping after the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.
FSG might have bought some leeway with this deal, but I hope this means the money is not done being spent. The defense remains in desperate need of reinforcements as well. Let’s see if this seismic shift in transfer policy was a one-off for the club, or the beginning of the revolution we’ve been waiting for.
