THE Confederation of African Football (CAF) has overturned Senegal’s AFCON final win and ruled in favour of hosts Morocco, handing the North Africans the 2025 trophy on a 3-0 scoreline.

The decision by CAF’s Appeal Board, shared in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, has already been interpreted as a political move to “please Moroccans.”

Morocco, which hosted the 2025/26 finals, had appealed an initial decision that maintained Senegal’s win.

Morocco’s argument was centred on Senegal’s decision to temporarily quit the game after it had been awarded a penalty in the final. Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz missed it.

Senegalese players had to be begged to get back on the pitch. Morocco said the 30 minutes delay meant they were winners, as per the rules.

“I think there were a lot of shady dealings to decide that Morocco are champions.

“It’s pitiful for the image that CAF is giving, it feels like Morocco can get away with anything.

“Morocco went to claim this victory on a technicality, this is only the beginning of the affair,” said former Senegal national team coach Claude Le Roy.

Social media is ablaze, with users mocking and criticising CAF president Patrice Motsepe.
