‘By Wicknell, by Aqua’ — A serial convict’s fine rapping skills

A serial convict, who made headlines when he rejected community service and chose to spend another five months in jail, is actually a promising RAPPER.

Bernard Hwete’s story, in which he told a magistrate he could not clean the streets of the capital because that is the responsibility of the Harare City Council, was one of our best trending articles last week.

Hwete is also a budding musician who has given himself the stage name ‘Liquid Yonke’.

Hidden beneath his amazing story, of rejecting community service and choosing to spend time in jail again, two years after his release, was a glimpse of his prowess as a rapper.

Hwete told the magistrate that he would prefer time in jail, again, after being convicted of stealing an iPhone 17 Pro Max, the latest in the iPhone family, because he wanted to concentrate on composing more songs.

He claims he can compose as many as 20 songs a day.

But, it was his ability to rap which was quite impressive.

He rapped: “By Lady, By Squanda

“By Army, By Commander,
“By Motor, By Jaguar,
“By Wicknell, By Aqua,
“By Coke, By Fanta.”

This is impressive as it gets.

Of course Hwete, who is set to be released on July 4, has a dark past.

He said when he was released from prison two years ago, after being convicted for drugs, he vowed he would not return there again.

But, he said, there were too many temptations in this world.

He hooked up with a sex worker and they used to stay together.

One night, at a nightclub along Nelson Mandela Avenue in Harare, she stole an iPhone 17 Pro Max.

When they returned home, he stole the phone from her.

He tried to settle the case by offering her US$40 but her friends told her that she was being duped because the phone was worth “a Honda Fit.”

He was arrested and was offered the option to perform community service.

However, he rejected it.

“I told the magistrate that cleaning should just be the responsibility of the Council.”

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison but will serve only five months. *_-H-Metro_*
