8 hit by trains in first quarter of 2026

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has reported an increase in the number of people struck by trains during the first quarter of 2026, although level crossing accidents showed a slight decline compared with the same period last year.

In a statement issued on 10 April 2026, the NRZ said that between January and March, eight people were hit by trains, resulting in two deaths and six injuries.

By comparison, in the first quarter of 2025, there were seven incidents, leading to two deaths and five injuries.

“Six level crossing accidents were recorded in the first three months of the year compared to seven last year,” the NRZ said.

“Four people were injured in this year’s level crossing accidents compared to none last year.

“The marginal decrease in level crossing accidents is a result of the impact of awareness campaigns conducted by the NRZ and its partners, including the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe and road users.”

The NRZ renewed its appeal to the public to remain vigilant when on or near railway tracks.

“The NRZ continues to urge the motorists to religiously observe level crossing regulations to curb accidents and save lives while members of the public are implored to maintain vigilance when on and around railway tracks to avoid being hit by trains,” reads the statement. *_-Pindula_*
