Mahlangu pockets R250k compensation, R150k outstanding

ALEXANDRA- The sentencing of Chatunga Mugabe and his co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, has been postponed to 29 April 2026 in the Alexandra Regional Court.

Mugabe, the son of the late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, pleaded guilty to pointing a firearm and contravening South Africa’s immigration laws.

Matonhodze pleaded guilty to attempted murder, illegal immigration, unlawful possession of ammunition, and defeating the ends of justice.

Mahlangu, who was employed at the Mugabe residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, was shot and wounded in February. The firearm has not been recovered.

Mahlangu is said to have received R250,000 of the R400,000 compensation agreed upon. The outstanding R150,000 remains unpaid. The defence lawyers are expected to use it in mitigation.

The payment of compensation and the accused’s guilty pleas are expected to be considered as mitigating factors during sentencing.

State prosecutors have called for custodial sentences for two accused individuals in a case involving firearm offences and attempted murder.

For Mugabe, the State is seeking 12 months’ direct imprisonment for pointing a firearm, as well as an additional 12 months for contravening the country’s firearms laws.

In the case of Tobias Matonhodze, prosecutors are pushing for significantly heavier penalties. They are seeking a five-year jail term for attempted murder.

Additional charges against Matonhodze include defeating the ends of justice, for which the State is requesting a 12-year sentence, as well as a fine for unlawful possession of ammunition.
Prosecutors are also seeking a further 12 months’ imprisonment for contravening firearms regulations. #fblifestyle
