Barca Kadoma secured their passage to the next stage of the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Vodds Spotlight at Rimuka Stadium on Saturday. In a match filled with early chances, contentious moments, and individual brilliance, it was a single second-half goal that ultimately separated the two sides.

The decisive strike came in the 51st minute through Barca Kadoma captain Pride Tafirenyika, who capitalized on a goalkeeping error to put the home side ahead.

The home team started brightly and could have taken the lead in the 3rd minute. Right winger Nathaniel Mahachi showed quick feet to dribble past the Vodds defense and create space in the box, but his shot was straight at Vodds goalkeeper James Banda, who held firm. The miss proved a sign of what was to come in a game where both sides created opportunities but struggled with the final touch. The early pressure from Barca set an attacking tone, and the home crowd responded with vocal support from the stands.

The first half was evenly matched, with both teams creating openings but lacking the final touch. In the 32nd minute, Barca Kadoma thought they had a route into the lead when a Vodds defender appeared to handle the ball inside the box. The home fans, backed by the brass band, erupted in appeals for a penalty, but referee Lloyd Beta waved play on, much to the disbelief of the Barca faithful.

Vodds Spotlight looked comfortable in possession and tested Barca Kadoma’s defense with a series of well-worked moves down the flanks. Bright Nzima and Chikapa Ishmael were a constant threat, using deft runs and quick feet to get in behind Barca’s backline. On several occasions they forced Barca goalkeeper Ben Munashe into action, but their finishing let them down, with efforts either drifting wide or being dealt with by Munashe at his best.

The breakthrough arrived early in the second half after a period of sustained pressure from Barca Kadoma. Pride Chitsugo delivered a well-placed cross into the Vodds Spotlight penalty area, and goalkeeper James Banda initially looked in control. However, he failed to hold onto the ball, spilling it under pressure. Captain Pride Tafirenyika reacted instantly, following up to tap the loose ball into the net. The goal gave Barca Kadoma a deserved lead and shifted the momentum firmly in their favor. It was a moment that highlighted the importance of concentration and quick reactions in knockout football, where a single lapse can decide the outcome.

After taking the lead, Barca Kadoma adjusted their approach to manage the game. They retained possession in key areas, slowed the tempo when needed, and remained compact defensively. Vodds Spotlight pushed forward in search of an equalizer late on, but Barca’s defense held firm to preserve the clean sheet.

Head coach David Sengu praised the impact of his younger players and the leadership of his captain after the match. Sengu explained that the coaching staff had worked on specific patterns in training that came through in the second half.

“It was a scrappy game that we missed a lot of chances,” Sengu said. “I think what we did at training was coming up and we had to introduce 2 youngsters in our starting 11 with Nathaniel Mahachi and Tafadzwa playing well, said Sengu” He added that the second-half improvement was decisive: “2nd half we had a much better performance scored thru veteran Pride Tafirenyika that shows how important he is and as the Captain led by example. We also missed lots of chances 2nd half but we will keep working on finishing.”

For Barca Kadoma, the result represents progress in a competition that offers both silverware and regional recognition. Advancing to the next stage gives the squad confidence and maintains momentum ahead of upcoming league and cup fixtures. The performance also underscores the value of leadership, with captain Tafirenyika contributing both on and off the ball.

Barca Kadoma’s left back Alaba Tagara was the standout performer on the day. He played a blinder at both ends of the pitch, combining defensive solidity with attacking intent. His passing range caught the eye, with several splitting passes that broke Vodds Spotlight’s defensive lines and created attacking opportunities for Barca Kadoma. Fans were quick to draw comparisons between Tagara’s style and that of former Dynamos and CAPS United left back Cephas Chimedza, known for his ability to influence games from deep positions. Tagara’s contribution ensured Barca maintained width and balance throughout the match and earned him the man of the match award.
