Mothers hailed for sacrifices, resilience
As the world marked Motherโs Day yesterday, Zimbabweans took time to honour mothers, celebrating their sacrifices, resilience and enduring love that continue to anchor families and communities.
For many, the day was not merely about gifts and celebrations, but a reflection on the critical role mothers continue to play in shaping homes and communities amid social and economic challenges.
Mrs Tariro Chikowore of Madokero Estates in Harare said Motherโs Day was a meaningful occasion that made mothers feel appreciated for their efforts.
โMothers go through a lot while trying to provide for their children and keep families together,โ she said.
โWe carry many responsibilities every day, from raising children to making sure there is food on the table and that everyone is okay. So this day reminds us that our efforts are recognised.โ
Mrs Chikowore said her children were planning a small family luncheon at home where they would spend quality time together.
Another resident, Ms Rumbidzai Moyo, said the day always reminded her of her late mother, who single-handedly raised six children.
โShe sacrificed everything for us to get an education and become responsible citizens,โ she said.
โThere were difficult times, but she remained strong for the family. Every Motherโs Day, I remember her sacrifices and the values she taught us.โ
Ms Moyo said she is commemorating the day by visiting her motherโs grave and donating groceries to elderly women at a local shelter.
Mrs Nyasha Dube said motherhood came with great responsibility and sacrifice.
โBeing a mother means becoming the backbone of the family,โ she said.
โYou become a provider, counsellor and caregiver at the same time. It is not easy, but it is a blessing.โ
She said her family planned to attend church before going out for dinner to mark the occasion.
Another mother, Mrs Melody Chari said Motherโs Day helped strengthen family bonds and encouraged children to appreciate their parents.
โMothers sacrifice quietly every day without expecting anything in return,โ she said.
โThis day allows families to express gratitude and love.โ
Mrs Chari said her children organised a surprise outing for her.
Mr Tawanda Muchengeti said mothers deserved recognition for the important role they played in society.
โAs men, we should appreciate the women who support families and raise children,โ he said.
