Armed robbers overpower guards at Tynwald Primary, take phones and school minibus
A day after armed robbers set fire to an elderly woman’s house in Greencroft, an armed gang raided Tynwald Primary School on Wednesday, stole valuables and drove off in the school’s vehicle.
Police said three robbers overpowered three security guards at the school before ransacking offices and opening the safes.
During the break-in, the suspects allegedly stole a Samsung M13 and a Samsung M14 mobile phone from one guard, and a Huawei Y9 from another.
The third guard kept his phone and later used it to call the police.
One of the robbers allegedly brandished a firearm, while the other two were armed with a machete and a garden pick.
The gang also stole the school’s Toyota Quantum, which they later abandoned. Police have since recovered the vehicle.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident and said police had recovered the three mobile phones and the vehicle.
“Police recovered a vehicle and some valuables when armed robbers pounced at a school in Tynwald. The total value stolen is US$13 300, and all was recovered,” Insp Chakanza said.
Some residents believe the robbers targeted the school because the raid coincided with the start of the second term, when they expected large sums of cash to be on site. *_-Pindula_*
