Government Pledges $100 Financial Assistance for Kariba Ferry Disaster Victims.

KARIBA — The government has announced a financial aid package providing $100 in direct cash assistance to every individual affected by the tragic Lake Kariba ferry disaster, aiming to relieve the immediate financial strain on grieving families and survivors.

The announcement was confirmed by Kariba District Development Coordinator Rodwell Mtetwa, who also heads the District Civil Protection Unit. Speaking during response coordination efforts, Mtetwa outlined the state’s plan to disburse funds to help families manage urgent expenditures, including funeral costs, transport, and essential supplies.

The emergency financial assistance is structured to ensure comprehensive support across all impacted groups. The stipend will cover both survivors of the tragedy and the families of those who perished. For deceased victims, payouts will be disbursed directly to verified next of kin to ensure smooth, transparent distribution.

“Everyone is going to receive it, whether deceased and living,” Mtetwa stated. “For the deceased, assistance will be collected by the next of kin. Everyone is receiving a hamper to cushion them during this difficult time.”

He added that local authorities are diligently capturing records of every affected individual so that no beneficiary is omitted from receiving state support. Beyond the direct $100 cash allocation, the government, supported by partner organizations and local institutions, is providing additional logistical aid—covering caskets, food provisions, clothing, and transport arrangements to assist families returning to their home areas.

The relief measure arrives amid ongoing search and recovery operations on Lake Kariba following the capsizing of the *Mbuya Nehanda* ferry near Long Island. Joint response teams involving the military, police, and local stakeholders remain deployed on the water to recover missing passengers and bring closure to the tragedy. Authorities continue to register all affected parties to streamline the delivery of state aid and ensure relief reaches families promptly.
