CAB3 Pioneer Mupambi Left Out as Mnangagwa Names 10 Senators

By Desire Tshuma

Harare -The appointment of ten Senators by President Emmerson Mnangagwa has triggered questions within sections of civil society and the church over the exclusion of Dr Abigale Mupambi, a prominent campaigner for the Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3 (CAB3).

Mupambi was among the activists who openly rallied support for CAB3, with her campaign extending to door-to-door mobilisation as she encouraged communities to back the constitutional reforms.

Her omission from the list of appointed Senators has since sparked debate, particularly among some activists and church leaders who believe her contribution to the campaign deserved recognition.

Bulawayo-based female activist Patience Nyathi has questioned why Mupambi was not among those appointed, given the visible role she played in mobilising support for CAB3.

Similar questions have also been raised by Rev Nyakuno from Manicaland, adding to growing discussion over the criteria used in selecting the ten Senators.

The debate comes despite Mupambi herself taking a conciliatory position following the appointments. Rather than openly attacking the process, Mupambi called on Zimbabweans to support the newly appointed Senators and work with them in advancing the country’s interests.

Her response has been viewed by some observers as an indication that, despite her apparent disappointment, she remains committed to the broader objectives she supported during the CAB3 campaign.

However, questions from civil society organisations and church leaders continue to centre on why someone who played an active role in mobilising support for CAB3 was ultimately left out of the Senate appointments.

For critics, the issue is not simply about Mupambi’s personal political ambitions but about whether those who invested significant effort in promoting the constitutional reforms were adequately recognised when appointments were eventually made.

The controversy has therefore opened a wider conversation about political appointments, loyalty, contribution and the expectations of activists who campaign for government-backed reforms.

While Mupambi has urged unity and cooperation with the newly appointed Senators, the questions surrounding her exclusion remain part of the growing public debate over the CAB3 Senate appointments.
