ZRP Launches Nationwide Road Safety Blitz As Schools Reopen For Third Term

Harare – The Zimbabwe Republic Police has announced intensified road safety and security measures as schools across the country reopen for the third term, warning motorists, transport operators, parents and school authorities to prioritize the safety of learners.
In a statement dated September 7, 2026, police said the school-opening period would see increased movement of learners traveling to boarding schools, while some pupils would also be returning home to prepare for the new term.
The ZRP urged parents, guardians and school authorities to ensure children use safe and reliable transport. Vehicles hired to ferry learners must be roadworthy and suitable for carrying passengers.
Transport operators and drivers were specifically warned against overloading vehicles, including carrying passengers together with goods and luggage in a manner that could compromise safety.
Police also cautioned drivers against speeding, reckless overtaking, negligent driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol or dangerous drugs.
Motorists have further been urged to exercise extreme caution around schools, bus stops, pedestrian crossings and other areas frequently used by learners.
The ZRP said it would intensify road safety enforcement operations, patrols and other policing measures throughout the country to enhance the safety and security of learners as they travel to schools and within their communities.
Beyond road safety, police called on parents, guardians and school authorities to remain vigilant against criminal activities that could target learning institutions. Schools were discouraged from keeping large amounts of cash on their premises. Parents and guardians were encouraged to use banks and other financial institutions when paying school fees and other school-related charges.
The public has also been urged to promptly report criminal activities, suspicious behavior and traffic violations at the nearest police station or through the police National Complaints Desk.
With thousands of learners expected to be on the roads, the operation will place particular focus on public transport, speeding, overloading and other violations that could put children at risk.
The ZRP appealed to all stakeholders to treat learner safety as a collective responsibility, saying vigilance by parents, schools, transport operators and motorists will be critical to ensuring a safe return to school.
