Thomas Mapfumo Returns to Zimbabwe for US$1m Private Performance Deal

Legendary Chimurenga musician Thomas Mapfumo has returned to Zimbabwe after an eight-year absence, ending months of speculation surrounding his acceptance of a lucrative private performance agreement.

Mapfumo, popularly known as Mukanya, arrived at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on Tuesday and was welcomed by government officials, music industry figures and representatives of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.

His return follows an agreement under which controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo pledged to pay him a combined US$1 million for two private performances — US$500,000 for each appearance.
Ministers welcome Mapfumo home

Mapfumo’s journey was confirmed through video footage shared by Youth Empowerment Minister Tino Machakaire, who met the veteran musician during the flight to Harare.

At the airport, he was received by Women’s Affairs Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority chief executive George Manyaya and veteran music promoter Josh Hozheri, among others.

Broadcaster Eric Knight shared pictures from the airport and said Mapfumo had returned at Chivayo’s invitation to perform at Jah Prayzah’s wedding and another private function.

“Mudhara Thomas Mapfumo has arrived in Harare,” Knight wrote on Facebook.

“Here at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, welcomed by Women Affairs Minister Monica Mutsvangwa and other top government officials, caught just before he disembarked from his flight.”

The high-profile government reception immediately attracted debate because of Mapfumo’s long-standing criticism of Zanu PF and President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.

Chivayo initially offered Mapfumo US$500,000 to perform at Jah Prayzah’s anticipated wedding, describing the proposed appearance as a wedding present for the contemporary musician.

The businessman subsequently offered another US$500,000 for Mapfumo to perform at his birthday or housewarming celebration, bringing the combined package to US$1 million.

Mapfumo accepted the offer in July and confirmed that he would travel from his base in the United States for both events.

“I just want to let you know that I will be coming to Zimbabwe to perform at Wicknell Chivayo’s birthday and also at Jah Prayzah’s wedding,” Mapfumo said at the time.

“Jah Prayzah is my son, and I’m certain he will be thrilled to have me performing at his wedding.”

Chivayo later confirmed that he would honour the agreement by paying the veteran musician US$500,000 for each performance.

He said the payment recognised Mapfumo’s contribution to Zimbabwean music and the role his songs played during the country’s liberation struggle.

The warm reception from senior government officials has generated discussion over whether Mapfumo’s return signals a change in his political position.

The musician has, however, maintained that the visit is strictly professional and should not be interpreted as an endorsement of the government or ruling party.

“Ndati ndikuudzei kuti ndirikuuya, ndezvebasa izvi,” Mapfumo said when announcing the visit — loosely translated as: “I wanted to let you know that I am coming. It is work, nothing else.”

Mapfumo has lived in the United States for more than two decades and has repeatedly used his music and public interviews to criticise corruption, political repression and economic mismanagement in Zimbabwe.

His last visit to the country was in 2018, when he returned after spending approximately 14 years away.

The latest homecoming brings one of Zimbabwe’s most influential musicians back into the public spotlight and sets the stage for two of the most lucrative private performances in the country’s music history.
