Beitbridge Border Post has long been identified as a hotspot for corrupt activities. In June 2022, ZIMRA flagged the border as a major corruption center, revealing that some of its officers were under investigation after failing to account for their wealth during lifestyle audits. These audits uncovered instances where officers had constructed mansions and acquired multiple properties without clear sources of income. ZIMRA’s loss control manager, Mr. Selleck Mapfeka, emphasized the need for comprehensive lifestyle audits for all stakeholders operating at the border to combat corruption effectively.

The issue of corruption at Beitbridge is not new. In 2019, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) arrested ten ZIMRA officers and agents stationed at the border post on allegations of smuggling vehicles into the country. This operation was part of a broader effort targeting the recovery of smuggled vehicles and highlighted the systemic challenges faced in curbing illicit activities at the border.

Further underscoring the extent of the problem, between 2018 and 2021, a total of 75 ZIMRA employees were arrested and prosecuted for various corrupt activities. This period also saw 34 stakeholders apprehended, reflecting the pervasive nature of corruption within the system.
