2 months old baby snatched in broad daylight in Gweru, while the mother was buying bananas
GWÉRU-A two-month-old baby girl was abducted in broad daylight in Gweru’s CBD on Saturday after an unknown woman allegedly snatched her from the verandah of Edgars Stores, police have confirmed.
The Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident occurred on 15 November 2025 at around 1:40pm when the infant’s mother, Faith Jakaza (26), briefly left the child in the care of her six-year-old daughter.
“The report had it that the mother, Faith Jakaza, aged 26, had just finished breast feeding her. She briefly left the baby on the lap of the baby’s six-year-old sister to buy bananas from a nearby vendor,” Mahoko said.
When Jakaza returned moments later, the elder child told her the baby had been taken by an unknown woman.
“On turning back after a few minutes, the mother discovered the elder daughter now without the baby, saying the baby had been snatched away,” Mahoko added.
The distraught mother reportedly screamed for help as she searched the area, but the baby had vanished.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect and appealed to the public for assistance.
“We appeal for any information that can help in locating the culprit and recover the baby. On the same note, we also advise mothers or persons with custody of babies and children to always keep them under close monitoring,” said Mahoko.
