Macheke – Allied Tobacco farmers for economic development hosted a tobacco field day yesterday at Taurai Sixpence homestead in Macheke, Murehwa South. The event drew dignitaries, including the Member of Parliament, Hon. Mangondo who emphasized the government’s support for tobacco farmers.

“Tobacco is a key crop for our economy, and we’re committed to supporting farmers,” Hon. Mangondo said. “We urge farmers to prioritize sustainable practices and environmental conservation.”

Councillor Taurai Sixpence, the local ward 7 councillor, echoed the MP’s sentiments. “We need to balance economic growth with environmental protection. Let’s work together to ensure sustainable tobacco farming practices.”

Jesina Mangwiro, chairlady of Allied Tobacco farmers for economic development, highlighted the group’s commitment to sustainable farming. “We’re working closely with the Forestry Commission to minimize our environmental footprint.”

“Deforestation is a ticking time bomb,” said Violet, PR officer for the Forestry Commission. “We’re urging farmers to adopt sustainable practices, like agroforestry and using alternative energy sources. The long-term benefits far outweigh the short-term gains.”

The event showcased best practices in tobacco farming, with farmers sharing tips on maximizing yields and reducing environmental impact.
