Six-year-old drowns in Lupane River amid rising water levels

A six-year-old boy from Insuza Village in Lupane District, Matabeleland North Province, drowned on Monday after being swept away by strong river currents while returning home from a local business centre.

The incident occurred under Chief Deli’s jurisdiction when the child reportedly lost his footing while crossing the river.

The boy’s body was later recovered approximately eight metres downstream from the point where he was last seen.

The tragedy marks the third reported drowning incident in Matabeleland North Province in recent weeks, raising renewed concerns over water safety amid increased river flows following persistent rains.

Two other recent fatalities involved members of an apostolic sect who drowned in the Zambezi River, according to authorities.
