New toll plaza construction begins on Harare–Nyamapanda Highway
Construction of a new toll plaza has commenced along the Harare–Nyamapanda Highway as authorities move to implement a major infrastructure upgrade that will see the key corridor rehabilitated and the Nyamapanda Border Post modernised.
Temporary road closures are now in effect to facilitate the works.
A toll plaza is a designated point along a highway where motorists pay user fees that contribute towards road construction, maintenance and rehabilitation.
The new facility forms part of a broader project aimed at improving one of the country’s strategic trade routes linking Zimbabwe to Mozambique.
Last year, an agreement was signed with local firm Henna Concession to rehabilitate the Harare–Nyamapanda Highway and upgrade the Nyamapanda Border Post, paving the way for commencement of the long-awaited project.
The corridor plays a critical role in regional commerce and cross-border traffic, and its upgrading is expected to enhance efficiency, safety and economic activity along the route.
The project will entail a comprehensive overhaul of the highway, including the dualisation of key urban sections in Harare and the construction of the new toll plaza.
Works will begin at the intersection of Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Way and Samora Machel Avenue in Harare.
At the same time, modernisation of the Nyamapanda Border Post is expected to streamline the movement of goods and travellers.
Plans are also in place to establish a Vehicle Inspectorate Department depot at the border — a development that will spare local residents the need to travel to Murehwa for vehicle licensing and inspections.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development yesterday announced a temporary road closure between the 40km and 40.5km pegs along the Harare–Nyamapanda Highway, from February 18 to July 31, 2026, to allow for construction of the toll plaza. Traffic will be diverted onto a detour road during this period.
