Suspect In The Murder Of Two Policemen In Zaka Captured By Civilians In Bikita

An armed robbery suspect accused of shooting dead two police officers in Zaka District, Masvingo Province, on Sunday morning has been arrested. He was picked up on Monday in Bikita District after allegedly going into hiding.

In a statement issued on Monday, 2 March 2026, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of Daniel Munyanyi (50) in the Nyika area of Bikita late in the afternoon.

He said the suspect was apprehended by members of the public and that the firearm allegedly used in the killings has been recovered.

Nyathi commended the residents of Nyika for working closely with the police to ensure the suspect’s arrest.

Munyanyi, of Ndume Village under Chief Ndanga in Zaka, is alleged to have shot and killed two CID detectives in his home village at around 5am on 1 March 2026.

According to police, the officers were part of a team tracking him in connection with armed robbery cases in Harare and surrounding areas.

The deceased officers have been identified as Detective Constables Bernard Chimbeke (37) and McKenzie Chitsowe (43).

Meanwhile, ZimLive reports that three other detectives were seriously injured during the shoot-out.

The officers are said to have sustained gunshot wounds, with one reportedly shot in the thigh, another in both legs, and a third suffering severe injuries that resulted in the amputation of one leg.
