Govt Warns Zimbabweans Against Joining Foreign Armies
The Zimbabwean government has warned citizens against enlisting in the military forces of other countries.
The warning follows reports that an unknown number of Zimbabweans, along with nationals from other African countries, have been lured to fight for Russia in its ongoing war with Ukraine.
It is alleged that many of those who ended up on the battlefield were recruited under the pretence of security or driving jobs in Russia, only to find themselves pushed into frontline fighting.
Several Zimbabweans are reported to have lost their lives in areas of Ukraine currently occupied by Russia, while some who are still alive are said to be appealing for help to return home.
Posting on X, the Permanent Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Ndavaningi Mangwana said the government is deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of Zimbabweans living abroad. He said:
“Govt strongly advises its citizens against enlisting in the military forces of other nations.
“We are gravely concerned for the safety and well-being of our nationals abroad.
“Reports received indicate that in such circumstances, our compatriots may not always receive treatment equal to that of those nations’ service members.
“Furthermore, in the event of a tragedy, the repatriation of mortal remains is a complex process that can deny families the crucial opportunity for closure.
“The safety of Zimbabweans and the peace of mind of their loved ones remain our utmost priority.”
