Government warns Zimbabweans about human traffickers offering fake jobs in South Africa, Middle East

The Government of Zimbabwe, through the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, has warned citizens about a rise in deceptive recruitment practices that can lead to human trafficking.

In a statement released on Friday, 13 March, the Ministry said criminal networks are luring job seekers with false promises of well-paying jobs in South Africa and the Middle East, including Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

Once victims arrive at their destinations, they are reportedly subjected to forced labour, domestic servitude, sexual exploitation, and have their documents confiscated.

The Ministry said that human trafficking victims often suffer physical abuse, psychological trauma, financial loss, and social stigma.

The Ministry outlined several warning signs that recruiters may be traffickers. These include demanding large upfront fees and refusing refunds, providing vague job descriptions or pressuring for immediate departure, offering contracts in languages the applicant does not understand, promising “instant wealth” or employment with “no experience required,” having no physical address or statutory licence, and contacting potential employees unsolicited from international numbers.

To protect themselves, citizens are advised to verify licences on www.mpslsw.gov.zw, research the recruiting agency, request written contracts, report suspicious offers, consult embassies before making any payments, use government job portals such as www.zim.gov.zw, and carry passport copies, emergency contacts, and cash when travelling.

The public is also urged to report any suspicious activity without delay by calling the toll-free number 116 (available 24/7) or via WhatsApp on 078 980 8016. *_-Pindula_*
