Harare – The State of Palestine has extended congratulations to Zimbabwe following its election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term.
In a statement issued by Ambassador Tamer Almassri, Palestine described Zimbabwe’s election, secured by an overwhelming mandate at the UN General Assembly, as “a testament to the respect and confidence that the international community bestow upon Zimbabwe”.
Almassri said the result is a clear recognition of Zimbabwe’s “principled commitment to diplomacy, its advocacy for the sovereignty of nations, and its steadfast pursuit of a more equitable international order”.
As Zimbabwe prepares to take its seat at the horseshoe table, Palestine expressed confidence that Zimbabwe will serve as “a powerful voice for the Global South”. The Ambassador said he trusts Zimbabwe will continue its “principled defense of international law, the protection of civilian populations, and the necessity of multilateral solutions to the world’s most pressing conflicts”.
“In these challenging times, when the global architecture for peace is being tested, the presence of a nation that understands the value of peace, dialogue, and non-interference is a vital contribution to the Council,” Almassri stated.
The statement also reaffirmed the “deep fraternal bond” between Palestine and Zimbabwe, rooted in shared history and a common struggle for national liberation, self-determination, and justice. Palestine expressed appreciation for Zimbabwe’s “unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people in our quest for an independent, sovereign state with Jerusalem as the Capital”.
The State of Palestine wished the Zimbabwean government continued success in its diplomatic endeavours on the world stage.
