IT’S NEGLIGENCE, FUMES A PARENT, AFTER TEEN SCHOOLBOY IS FOUND DEAD IN SCHOOL’S SWIMMING POOL… School will be closed today and tomorrow
AUTHORITIES at Hellenic Academy are facing accusations of ‘NEGLIGENCE’ after a teenage schoolboy was found dead in the school’s swimming pool last week.
The accusations were raised by some parents, and guardians, who spoke to H-Metro in the wake of the tragedy.
Daniel Mukudzei Moyana, a 14-year-old Form One student, was found dead in a swimming pool after having attended a swimming lesson on Thursday.
The school has appealed to the public to avoid speculation related to the tragedy and to respect the grieving Moyana family.
Hellenic Academy announced that the school will be closed TODAY and TOMORROW, in the wake of the tragedy, and normal lessons will resume on Wednesday.
However, Cambridge exams will go on as scheduled at the school today and tomorrow.
“Hellenic Academy confirms the passing of Form 1 pupil Daniel Mukudzei Moyona on the evening of September 24, 2026,” the school said in a statement. The circumstances surrounding Daniel’s passing are currently being attended to by relevant authorities.
“Hellenic Academy is cooperating fully with the appropriate processes.
“In line with the request made by the Moyana family in their statement yesterday, we ask that speculation regarding the circumstances of Daniel’s passing be avoided while these processes are underway and that the family’s privacy by respected.
“The Academy is providing appropriate support to the pupils affected by Daniel’s passing.
“Hellenic Academy will be closed on Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 September.
“Cambridge exams will continue as scheduled during this period with normal school activities resuming on Wednesday, 30 September.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with Daniel’s family at this difficult time.”
Nattie College has also shared its condolences in the wake of the tragedy.
H-Metro could not confirm last night whether reports that Hellenic Academy held their inter-house swimming competitions on Friday, just a day after the tragedy, were true.
Sources said Daniel mother, Takana Mary Moyana, went on a routine trip to collect him from school at around 1800 hours on Thursday.
She failed to find him at the school gate, as had been the routine.
The sources said Mary later approached the school’s Head of Aquatics, Hadyn Skinner, who escorted her to the swimming pool after it emerged that Daniel had a scheduled swimming lesson earlier that day.
On arrival, the pool area was locked.
Skinner, the sources said, then jumped over the security fence and found the learner’s school bag on the terraces. Skinner then removed the tents, which were used to cover the swimming pool, after the lessons.
That was when he found the pupil’s body in the pool. Police investigations are now examining the circumstances surrounding the swimming session.
It is alleged that about 17 pupils attended the training under the supervision of Shingai Jangara (44) on that fateful day.
Jangara, when interviewed, said he accounted for all students before and after the session.
He also claimed that all gates were locked and that Daniel was with the other pupils when they left the swimming pool arena.
“We have been deeply affected by this incident at a school ground,” one of the guardians said.
A parent accused the school of poor procedures, saying the incident reflected “serious negligence” and unprofessionalism.
Although national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi could not be reached for comment, H-Metro has been informed that the case, reported under RRB 7000158 at Borrowdale Police Station, is under investigations. _*HMetro*_
