The accident occurred around 10am along Robert Mugabe Highway.

Mashonaland West acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Ian Kohwera, confirmed the accident.

Ass Insp Kohwera said the accident involved two Honda Fit vehicles and a Leyland lorry which had developed a mechanical fault and broken down.

“I can confirm a fatal accident that occurred on January 2 at around 10am in Norton at the 6km peg along the Robert Mugabe Highway,” said Ass Insp Kohwera.

He said the first Honda fit which had no passengers was being driven by Shepherd Mumba, 30, from Norton, while the second one was being driven by Tafadzwa Musosoni.

He said Mumba was travelling from Harare to Murombedzi while Musosoni had two passengers on board.

“The other vehicle is an Ashock Leyland lorry which was being driven by Noel Motsi, 28, of Budiriro 5 in Harare.”

He said upon reaching the 6km peg, Mumba tried to avoid the Leyland lorry which was stationery, but it was roo late.

Ass Insp Kohwera said as a result, he encroached into Musosoni’s lane and both cars sideswiped the lorry.

“Mumba had avoided hitting the Leyland and his vehicle then veered off the road into the right lane where it crashed killing both passengers on the spot,” he said.

“I want to urge drivers to observe road traffic safety regulations when driving to avoid loss of life,” he said
