CONFIRMED: Ronwen Williams become first goalkeeper to save 4 penalties in a major international competition

The name on every football fan’s mouth in the world now is Ronwen Williams. The 32-year-old South African goalkeeper has been confirmed by CAF, FIFA, UEFA and CONMEBOL that none has it in their books that any keeper has made four saves in a single game in AFCON, FIFA World Cup, Copa America and EUROS.

CAF confirmed that Ronwen Williams had become the first goalkeeper to save 4 penalties in a single AFCON shootout. It was an AFCON record but it was later also confirmed that the feat had never been done in any major tournament.

South Africa played 0-0 against Cape Verde in a keenly contested game in the Quarter-finals of the 2023 AFCON after energy sapping 120 minutes.

In the shootout, Ronwen Williams spectacularly saved 4 of Cape Verde’s 5 penalties. His incredible penalty-saving skills are now a huge record as it will take ages for it to be broken.
