Chamisa blasts Tagwirei wedding extravagance: ‘Looted wealth stinks to high heaven’

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has condemned the lavish wedding involving the family of controversial tenderpreneur Kudakwashe Tagwirei, saying the “looted wealth stinks to high heaven”.

Chamisa described the extravagant ceremony and reported US$20 million in gifts as a symbol of deep inequality, alleged state capture and the plunder of national resources while ordinary Zimbabweans continue to endure economic hardship.

In a statement shared on his social media, Chamisa said the wedding guest list represented “a roll call of the few who continue to plunder the nation’s wealth and resources for their own benefit,” adding that the “obscene display of looted wealth stinks to high heaven.”

He argued that the extravagance surrounding the ceremony stood in sharp contrast to the hardships facing ordinary Zimbabweans, including deteriorating healthcare services, struggling schools, low salaries, eroded pensions and poor infrastructure.

“At a time when millions are suffering, such extravagance exposes the deep inequality and moral decay at the heart of our society,” Chamisa said.

He called on citizens to reject what he termed “state capture” and demand new leadership that prioritises the interests of ordinary people rather than “a privileged few.”

The comments follow widespread attention surrounding the wedding of Taonanyasha John Tagwirei and Poneso Tinomuda Janda, which reportedly featured gifts valued at more than US$20 million.

The wedding has since sparked widespread debate on social media, with some defending the family’s right to celebrate their wealth while others questioned the scale of extravagance at a time of economic hardship for many Zimbabweans.

According to reports circulating after the event, businessman Tagwirei and his wife Sandra gifted the newlyweds US$2.5 million in cash and 33 hectares of land in Umwinsidale said to be worth approximately US$15 million.

The ceremony was attended by several prominent businesspeople, senior government officials and other high-profile figures, many of whom reportedly presented expensive gifts.

Controversial tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo reportedly gifted the couple US$250,000 and a luxury designer handbag, while gold dealer Scott Sakupwanya contributed US$500,000.

Youth Minister Tino Machakaire reportedly gifted the couple a Defender Octa luxury vehicle believed to be valued at nearly US$470,000.

Senior government official George Guvamatanga and his wife reportedly donated 25 pregnant pedigree Beefmaster heifers and US$250,000.

Award-winning gospel musician Everton Mlalazi was also reported to have contributed US$150,000.

Over two and a half years after resigning as President of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Chamisa has faced criticism for not speaking out more on the political, social and economic crises afflicting the country.

His criticism of the Tagwirei wedding will no doubt be welcomed by his army of supporters who believe his voice is important in shaping the national narrative in Zimbabwe.
