Beitbridge prophet jailed 15 years for raping brother’s stepdaughter

A self-proclaimed prophet from Beitbridge, aged 52, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail after being convicted of raping his brother’s 18-year-old stepdaughter.

The man, whose name is being withheld, was convicted and sentenced by Beitbridge Regional Magistrate Charity Maphosa last Thursday.

The incident happened on 26 May 2026. The court heard that the girl was sleeping at home in the morning when the “prophet” called her.

He asked her if she knew her father, and she said she did not know her biological father. The convict told the girl to follow him to the Mzingwane River, saying he would pray for her to know her biological father.

When they got to the river, the convict told the girl to fetch water and a small stone to use in the prayers. She did as she was told.

He sprinkled water on her face and on the front of her skirt before removing her skirt and tights and placing them on the ground. He gave her his jacket and told her to lie on the ground facing upwards.

He then raped her, and she screamed for help. A villager who was nearby heard her screams, rushed towards her, and found the man raping her.

The accused ran away, and the girl went to file a police report.
