WOMAN FURIOUS WITH RIVERTON ACADEMY OWNER AFTER SON IS BASHED BY ANOTHER STUDENT

THE mother of a 14-year-old student at Riverton Academy is furious that the school’s authorities allegedly failed to report injuries suffered by their son in a chilling bullying incident.

Chido Chiwenga said her son, Makabongwe Magwaliba, sustained a swollen eye and an injured mouth after being beaten by another student on June 23.

Chiwenga said she only learnt of the vicious assault during a school visiting day, four days after the incident, and she confronted the school owner Philimon Mutangiri.

She said the case should have been reported to her promptly.

Her son was later granted permission to leave the school for treatment in Harare.

“I am yet to understand the reason why school authorities decided to keep quiet over the bullying of my child,” she said.

“My child was also beaten as a disciplinary measure over the fight and the injuries he sustained have left him relying on drinking yoghurt.”

Chido said after the incident, the school owner showed no remorse and, she claims, he allegedly ordered her to find an alternative school if she was unhappy with the school’s actions.

“We expect professionalism from school authorities as well as the safety of our children at schools,” she said.

The bullying case is now under police investigation.

Harare Central Police Station has recorded the matter under IR 070262.

Police could not be reached for comment.

No comment, too, could be obtained from the school owner, Mutangiri.

The teenage student is back at Riverton Academy.

Police reports indicate that his father, Thembinkosi Magwaliba, took him back to school.

Thembinkosi and Chido separated in 2018.

She took custody of their two children.

Thembinkosi could also not be reached for his side of the story.

Chido claims her son is yet to fully recover.
